About the Role
DHL eCommerce is seeking a Scala Developer to work on backend systems that support its consumer delivery platforms.
The developer will take ownership of services from design through production and ongoing operation. The role focuses on scalable backend development, event-driven architecture, reliability, testing, observability, and continuous improvement.
The position is based in Utrecht and offers a hybrid working model with approximately one or two office days per week where possible.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services using Scala.
- Take ownership of services from initial design through production and ongoing maintenance.
- Build systems supporting Track & Trace and delivery preferences.
- Contribute to functionality behind the My DHL App and shipping applications.
- Develop platforms that provide real-time tracking data to recipients.
- Build and maintain event-driven services processing large volumes of status updates.
- Work within a multidisciplinary Scrum team with engineers and a Product Owner.
- Contribute to architectural decisions and platform standards.
- Maintain a strong focus on software quality, testing, and observability.
- Identify and address technical debt.
- Support system stability, scalability, and performance.
- Contribute to improvements in developer experience.
- Share technical knowledge with colleagues.
- Participate in production ownership and operational responsibility.
- Work in three-week development sprints.
Requirements
- HBO or WO level of professional and analytical capability.
- Extensive professional experience as a Scala Developer.
- Experience working within professional software engineering teams.
- Experience developing scalable backend systems.
- Interest in or experience with event-driven architecture.
- Strong focus on automated testing and production reliability.
- Ability to take ownership of software and production services.
- Willingness to share knowledge with colleagues.
- Good command of Dutch.
- Strong interest in system reliability, software architecture, and user experience.
