About the Role
Cleverbase is looking for a Medior Back-end Engineer (Scala) to join its team in The Hague. The role focuses on developing the core backend services that support cryptographic operations, digital signatures, certificate management, and secure processing of sensitive data. The engineer will work with experienced colleagues while contributing to architecture, code quality, and platform improvements in a compliance-driven environment. This is a hybrid, full-time position (32-40 hours per week).
Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services in Scala using a functional programming approach.
- Develop and maintain services for digital signatures, electronic seals, timestamps, and PKI.
- Build and extend REST APIs and gRPC interfaces between services.
- Create and maintain PostgreSQL database schemas and migrations.
- Contribute to architecture discussions and technical decision-making.
- Write clean, well-tested, and well-documented code.
- Collaborate with compliance and audit teams to ensure solutions meet regulatory requirements, including eIDAS.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of development practices.
Requirements
- 2-5 years of experience as a Back-end Engineer.
- Demonstrated experience with Scala or another JVM language combined with strong interest in functional programming.
- Understanding of type systems and functional programming concepts.
- Ability to work independently on well-defined features and services.
- Interest in building secure and reliable systems.
- Fluency in Dutch and English.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with Scala 2.13 and the Typelevel ecosystem, including Cats and Cats-Effect.
- Familiarity with http4s, tapir, fs2, doobie, or Akka.
- Knowledge of REST API design and gRPC/Protobuf.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and schema migration tools such as Flyway.
- Experience with unit, integration, property-based, and BDD testing, as well as CI/CD.
- Familiarity with Docker or Kubernetes.
- Experience with cryptographic libraries such as BouncyCastle or DSS.
- Knowledge of PKI standards, cryptography, or digital identity solutions.
