About the Role
The Scala API Engineer will work on the core of the fintech data platform, designing and evolving scalable, high-performance APIs. The position offers real technical ownership and the opportunity to impact API architecture directly. Both permanent and freelance arrangements are available, with a flexible hybrid setup between Brussels, Ghent, and remote work.
Responsibilities
- Develop and enhance internal and external APIs using Scala (Play Framework experience is a strong plus)
- Optimize API performance, scalability, and reliability
- Work with relational databases to ensure efficient data access
- Elevate API design, versioning, security, and documentation standards
- Collaborate with product and data teams to translate features into clean technical solutions
Required Skills
- Solid experience with Scala; Play Framework experience is highly desirable
- Strong backend mindset with an affinity for API architecture
- Good understanding of relational databases and performant querying
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience with Scala
- Ability to commute to the office locations when needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, and RDS
- Knowledge of Python for internal tooling or data pipelines
- Familiarity with graph databases, e.g., Neo4j
- Experience or interest in columnar storage solutions like Clickhouse
