About the Role
The Senior AI Engineer Scala will design and develop AI-powered applications with a strong focus on machine learning, NLP, and scalable microservices architectures. The role combines research-driven experimentation with production-ready implementation, contributing to intelligent systems that directly impact product capabilities and business performance.
This is a hybrid position based in Lisbon, with more than 20 percent of time spent at the office in MarquĂŞs de Pombal. The start date is as soon as possible.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain machine learning and AI-driven applications including NLP and supervised and unsupervised models
- Prototype and experiment with multiple technical approaches to solve complex problems
- Identify relevant datasets and lead annotation processes for machine learning use cases
- Train, retrain, and evaluate models with statistical analysis of results
- Collaborate with cross-functional experts to deploy scalable AI products and services
- Monitor emerging machine learning technologies and academic research
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Contribute innovative AI-driven solutions to business challenges
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, or a related field
- Minimum 3 years of engineering experience or 5+ years with a Bachelor’s degree
- Strong expertise in Scala and experience with Scala Play Framework
- Advanced experience with Elasticsearch
- Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL or other relational databases
- Experience with microservices architecture and content-based applications
- Strong understanding of AI techniques including NLP, classification, clustering, optimization, and deep neural networks
- Knowledge of mathematical foundations behind machine learning models
- Understanding of data structures, semantic extraction, and text representation in NLP contexts
- Proficiency in Python using object-oriented programming principles preferred
- Experience with Docker and cloud platforms such as Azure, GCP, or AWS
- Experience building APIs including RESTful and asynchronous services
- Familiarity with large language models is considered a plus
- Ability to write clean, production-ready code
- Fluent English required; additional languages are an advantage
