About the Role
A Software Engineer is sought for the Commerce Payment Integrations team, responsible for building and maintaining critical payment functionality within the BigCommerce platform.
The role focuses on payment gateway integrations and checkout systems that directly support merchant transactions. These services are business-critical, requiring high reliability, performance, and security.
The engineer will work in a production-focused environment where ownership of systems includes reliability, incident response, and continuous improvement of payment-related services.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain payment integration features in a Ruby on Rails service
- Build and support APIs and cart-to-order payment flows
- Ensure high availability, performance, and correctness of checkout and payment systems
- Participate in incident management and on-call responsibilities for production services
- Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to post-incident reviews
- Improve system reliability through monitoring, observability, and instrumentation
- Optimize performance, including database and query-level improvements
- Collaborate with infrastructure and operations teams to improve system architecture
- Work closely with product and design teams on feature development
- Participate in technical discussions and architecture decisions
- Contribute to code reviews and maintain engineering quality standards
- Support continuous improvement of development and deployment processes
- Mentor other engineers within the team
Requirements
- 3+ years of backend development experience with strong focus on Ruby on Rails
- Experience building and operating production-grade systems
- Strong understanding of observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry, or Lightstep
- Experience integrating third-party APIs, especially stateful or transactional systems such as payment flows
- Understanding of Domain Driven Design principles
- Experience with CI/CD and full software development lifecycle ownership
- Ability to troubleshoot live production systems using logs, metrics, and traces
- Experience building scalable and high-performance web services
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
Preferred Experience
- Experience with PHP and Scala
- Exposure to system reliability engineering practices and production incident handling
