About the Company

A major UK streaming and digital media platform is expanding its subscription services ecosystem and is looking for experienced backend engineers to support its continued growth. The platform serves a large-scale consumer audience and focuses on delivering subscription and transactional services at scale.

Engineering teams operate in a cross-functional environment, working closely with product, frontend, and technical leadership to build and evolve cloud-native systems.

About the Role

A Scala Engineer is required to join a product engineering team focused on building and scaling subscription and payment-related backend services. The role involves working on modern Scala microservices within AWS and Kubernetes environments.

The position is fully remote and open to EU-based candidates working in UK hours, with an initial duration of 6 months and a likely extension.

The engineer will contribute to new backend development, API design, and platform reliability within a high-scale consumer product environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement backend endpoints for subscription and account-related user journeys
  • Develop and maintain Scala-based microservices in AWS and Kubernetes environments
  • Build scalable backend APIs supporting transactional and subscription systems
  • Collaborate with Product, Frontend Engineers, and Technical Leads
  • Participate in technical design discussions and scalability improvements
  • Support operational stability of production services and assist with issue resolution
  • Deliver clean, maintainable, and production-ready code
  • Contribute to the evolution and scaling of existing backend systems
  • Work within Agile teams to deliver planned product features

Requirements

  • Strong commercial experience as a Scala Engineer
  • Solid experience with functional programming in Scala
  • Experience building scalable backend APIs and microservices
  • Experience with Scala ecosystem libraries such as Cats, Doobie, http4s, Blaze, or Tapir
  • Experience working with AWS and Kubernetes
  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with subscription-based, transactional, or payment platforms
  • Experience integrating with third-party services or external providers
