Engineering teams operate in a cross-functional environment, working closely with product, frontend, and technical leadership to build and evolve cloud-native systems.
About the Role
A Scala Engineer is required to join a product engineering team focused on building and scaling subscription and payment-related backend services. The role involves working on modern Scala microservices within AWS and Kubernetes environments.
The position is fully remote and open to EU-based candidates working in UK hours, with an initial duration of 6 months and a likely extension.
The engineer will contribute to new backend development, API design, and platform reliability within a high-scale consumer product environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement backend endpoints for subscription and account-related user journeys
- Develop and maintain Scala-based microservices in AWS and Kubernetes environments
- Build scalable backend APIs supporting transactional and subscription systems
- Collaborate with Product, Frontend Engineers, and Technical Leads
- Participate in technical design discussions and scalability improvements
- Support operational stability of production services and assist with issue resolution
- Deliver clean, maintainable, and production-ready code
- Contribute to the evolution and scaling of existing backend systems
- Work within Agile teams to deliver planned product features
Requirements
- Strong commercial experience as a Scala Engineer
- Solid experience with functional programming in Scala
- Experience building scalable backend APIs and microservices
- Experience with Scala ecosystem libraries such as Cats, Doobie, http4s, Blaze, or Tapir
- Experience working with AWS and Kubernetes
- Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams

- Experience with subscription-based, transactional, or payment platforms
- Experience integrating with third-party services or external providers
