About the Role
Scrumconnect Consulting is seeking a Software Developer to design, build, and maintain software for UK government clients.
The developer will work within a multidisciplinary agile team and contribute to user-centred digital services that follow Government Digital Service standards and accessibility requirements.
The role involves hands-on software development in environments where security, performance, reliability, and accessibility are important. The position is hybrid and based in Newcastle, with an initial duration of six months.
Responsibilities
- Build and deliver software components that meet user needs.
- Write clean, secure, and well-tested code.
- Follow modern software development standards.
- Operate and support the services developed by the team.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve production issues.
- Contribute to engineering best practices.
- Help improve internal development guidelines.
- Coach apprentices and junior developers.
- Contribute to the company’s engineering community.
- Conduct code reviews.
- Participate in architectural decisions.
- Collaborate with product, design, and user research teams.
- Support services in production.
- Participate in incident response and observability activities.
Requirements
- Strong experience designing, building, and operating production software systems.
- Experience with Scala.
- Experience with the Play Framework.
- Experience with MongoDB.
- Experience with AWS.
- Experience with Kubernetes, including EKS.
- Experience with Terraform.
- Experience with GitHub Actions.
- Experience with Splunk.
- Experience with Grafana.
- Understanding of Test-Driven Development.
- Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment.
- Experience conducting code reviews.
- Understanding of information security principles.
- Ability to apply secure-by-default engineering practices.
- Experience with system design and integration in complex environments.
- Experience supporting production services.
- Experience with on-call activities or incident response.
- Understanding of observability.
- User-focused approach to software development.
- Experience collaborating with designers and product teams.
- Experience working with Scrum, Kanban, or similar delivery models.
- Experience working on high-volume transactional digital services, or the ability to develop this knowledge quickly.
- Experience delivering digital services within UK central government or the wider public sector.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in regulated public-sector environments.
- Experience working in financial-services environments.
- Contributions to open-source government engineering projects.
- Participation in engineering communities of practice.
- Experience delivering talks, writing technical articles, or providing internal training.
