About the Role
Tiko is seeking a Scala Backend Engineer to join its Agile technology team.
The engineer will develop and maintain the software supporting Tiko’s platform, with a strong focus on Scala backend development, functional programming, security, scalability, testing, and software quality.
The position can be performed remotely by candidates currently based in Portugal, South Africa, or Kenya.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain features for Tiko’s software platform.
- Design and implement backend software using Scala.
- Apply software engineering principles throughout design, development, testing, maintenance, and evaluation.
- Ensure developed software meets information security and personal data protection requirements.
- Build software with a strong focus on quality and scalability.
- Participate actively in technical meetings and projects.
- Coordinate development activities with other team members.
- Contribute to Agile ceremonies and engineering practices.
- Keep knowledge of relevant technologies and development practices up to date.
- Prepare clear technical documentation.
- Ensure documentation can be understood and reused by other team members.
- Contribute to the continuous development and improvement of the software platform.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience developing Scala-based backend systems.
- Strong Scala development skills.
- Strong understanding of functional programming principles.
- Hands-on experience with the Typelevel ecosystem.
- Experience with Cats and Cats Effect is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and logical-thinking skills.
- Strong focus on software quality and scalability.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Current residence in Portugal, South Africa, or Kenya.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing microservices.
- Experience with AWS.
