About the Role
A Scala Tech Lead position for a fintech client engagement based in Ukraine, requiring full-time on-site work (40 hours per week). The role combines hands-on backend development with team leadership and client-facing communication. The Tech Lead is responsible for guiding engineering delivery, maintaining code quality, and ensuring alignment between the development team and the client’s engineering and product stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Define component-level architecture for new features and microservices aligned with the client’s Scala-based platform
- Collaborate with client engineering and product teams to translate requirements into technical milestones
- Maintain codebase health and ensure consistent engineering practices across the team
- Establish and enforce coding standards and Scala best practices
- Evaluate and recommend libraries, frameworks, and third-party tools in collaboration with the client
- Ensure system performance, scalability, and security in production environments
- Serve as escalation point for complex technical issues and production incidents (e.g., JVM tuning, RabbitMQ throughput)
- Lead code reviews with a focus on architecture, maintainability, and standards compliance
- Identify project risks, manage dependencies, and ensure delivery commitments are met
- Act as the primary technical contact for client engineering and product teams
- Communicate risks, blockers, and technical trade-offs to stakeholders in a clear and timely manner
- Participate in joint planning, discovery, and sprint review sessions with the client
- Translate business requirements into technical tasks and milestones
- Lead, mentor, and support the engineering team on a daily basis
- Facilitate Agile ceremonies including stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives
- Monitor team workload and report capacity or performance concerns
- Support onboarding and knowledge transfer for new team members
- Foster a collaborative and delivery-focused team culture
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
- 7+ years of backend development experience with Scala and/or Java
- 3+ years of experience in a Tech Lead or Staff Engineer role
- Experience leading engineering teams in client-facing or staff augmentation setups
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, parallelization, and performance optimization
- Experience with RabbitMQ; Kafka experience is a plus
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar relational databases
- Strong experience with AWS cloud services
- Experience working in Agile environments
- Strong English communication skills (written and spoken)
