About the Role
JetBrains is seeking a Technical Product Manager to improve IntelliJ IDEA’s Scala support and enhance the developer experience for Scala users. The role focuses on understanding developer workflows, gathering user feedback, defining product improvements, and collaborating with engineering teams to evolve the Scala plugin.
The successful candidate will work closely with developers, experiment with Scala projects and tooling, analyze user needs, and contribute to product decisions related to IDE functionality, build systems, debugging, code insight, and developer workflows.
Responsibilities
- Own the product vision for the Scala plugin and ensure it provides reliable and productive IDE support.
- Analyze product usage data and conduct user interviews to understand developer workflows.
- Use IntelliJ IDEA with the Scala plugin regularly to evaluate features and identify issues.
- Maintain and develop reference projects for feature demonstrations and developer experience validation.
- Manage and adapt the plugin roadmap across short-term releases, mid-term initiatives, and long-term Scala ecosystem projects.
- Align plugin development plans with Scala compiler releases and IntelliJ IDEA release cycles.
- Evaluate product trade-offs related to cost, risks, maintenance, and user value.
- Define feature requirements, problem statements, success criteria, and scope.
- Collaborate with engineers to validate and refine product ideas.
- Represent Scala developers and library authors by prioritizing recurring user challenges.
- Coordinate with Developer Advocates, IntelliJ IDEA teams, Marketing teams, and other JetBrains departments.
Requirements
- Professional software development experience with Scala.
- At least 5 years of experience in technical product management or a comparable role within a complex technical domain.
- Experience working closely with products, users, and engineering teams.
- Experience with AI coding tools and AI agents, along with an interest in their impact on developer workflows.
- Ability to define product roadmaps with clear goals, success criteria, and trade-offs.
- Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to represent products externally through conferences, blog posts, and developer community interactions.
- Strong interest in developer experience and improving software development workflows.
Nice to Have
- Experience developing IntelliJ Platform plugins or working with the IntelliJ Platform SDK.
- Experience with language tooling or IDE development.
- Experience creating evaluation pipelines, benchmarks, or quality measurement systems.
- Experience delivering technical talks or publishing content for developer audiences.
