About the Role
QAD Redzone is seeking a Senior Scala Backend Engineer to develop and maintain its API backend and contribute to AI-related integrations.
The engineer will work primarily with Scala and will be responsible for building reliable backend services, maintaining API contracts, supporting production systems, and contributing to the evolution of a large existing codebase.
The position is a full-time direct hire role. Candidates must already be based in the United Kingdom, and visa sponsorship or relocation support is not available.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the QAD Redzone API backend using Scala.
- Develop and maintain the MCP server supporting AI integrations.
- Improve the use of OpenSearch within the backend application.
- Deliver development work committed during each sprint.
- Apply modern Scala and web technologies to improve the product.
- Provide technical expertise during production incidents.
- Help investigate and resolve customer issues.
- Participate in engineering forums and technical discussions.
- Contribute ideas for continuous system improvement.
- Collaborate with the wider engineering team.
- Write maintainable and testable code.
- Support API-first development practices.
- Maintain versioned API contracts.
- Contribute to backend services deployed on AWS and Kubernetes.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience as a Backend Engineer.
- At least 5 years of professional Scala development experience.
- Java development knowledge.
- Experience with API-first development using OpenAPI Specification.
- Experience generating Tapir endpoints and models from OpenAPI specifications.
- Understanding of versioned API contracts.
- Experience using Chimney for object transformations.
- Experience with asynchronous functional programming using Cats Effect.
- Experience publishing and consuming Avro-formatted Kafka messages.
- Experience designing relational database structures using PostgreSQL.
- Experience with transactional database access using Slick or Doobie.
- Understanding of database migration approaches such as expand-and-contract.
- Experience writing observable and testable code.
- Experience with testing libraries such as Specs2 and ScalaMock.
- Ability to refactor and develop within large legacy codebases.
- Understanding of modular software design.
- Experience with Trunk-Based Development.
- Experience with LaunchDarkly feature flags.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
- Experience with AWS.
- Experience with Kubernetes, including EKS.
- Experience using Docker.
- Current residence in the United Kingdom.
